Children need to be encouraged by parents and teachers to learn their respective vernacular language.
The comment was made by the Labasa Hindi Teacher Association president, Agya Prasad, on Hindi Diwas (Day) celebrations at Kshatriya Hall on Sep 25.
The celebration promoted the importance of the Hindi language among the younger generation by organising poster, oratory and essay competitions on the theme ù Hindi Language, Our Future.
Twelve primary and six secondary schools participated in the day-long event.
"The Hindi language is our identity. The Hindi language is our mother tongue and we have to retain it to avoid losing it.
"This language was brought here by our forefathers and it is important for parents and teachers to teach children and help retain our culture."
