I would unreservedly and with joy in my heart recommend Dominique Lapierre and Larry Collins' Freedom at Midnight.
Admittedly, it has been fashion in some circles, especially the academic, to dismiss it as 'pop history'. Pop history, it may be; but there are few books which bring out the legend and lore of India as stunningly and evocatively as this from the writers of innumerable bestsellers. It brings alive the pageant of India's history, like no other book since or before.
