Reading makes their life bearable

Most of the nearly 800 convicts of the Central Prison at Viyyur, near here, are not book lovers. Nor are they in the habit of reading.

In fact, with the criminal background, till they had landed behind the bars, they were allergic to books and reading. But the confinement in the prison had attracted many of the prisoners to the world of reading.
Now many of the prisoners here are regular visitors of the jail library, housed in a separate building in the jail compound.

Ramu (name changed), a prisoner undergoing life term, said he enjoyed reading novels."Now, I spent my entire free time reading the books borrowed from the library.
