Chakraborty former Chairman of Modern Indian Languages & Sr. Professor of Bangla Language and a well recognized teacher of Aligarh Muslim University ‘Shiksha Ratan Purashkar’ of India International Friendship Society, in a glittering function held in New Delhi.
Prof. (Dr.) T. B. Chakraborty is the senior teacher of Bangla in the department of Modern Indian Language of Aligarh Muslim University. He has authored 22 books and translated 23 books of Bangla. He has written first book on Sir Syed biography in bangla. He is also editor of Aligarh Research Journal. His range of research is Indian folklore, their tradition and mass reorganization.

A death in Aligarh
We do not yet know if Shrinivas Siras, poet, Marathi teacher, and professor at Aligarh Muslim University, took his own life. We do know that the months prior to his being found dead in a flat in Aligarh’s Durga Wadi neighbourhood were filled with disappointment, frustration and anger, as the institution to which he had given more than two decades of service turned away from him because of who he was. Siras had to turn to the courts: last Friday the Allahabad high court stayed his suspension from the AMU faculty, and ordered the university to reverse its decision expelling him from faculty housing — in which he had been filmed in an act of consensual sex, which the filmers passed on to the university administration, which instead of being horrified at this blatant invasion of a teacher’s privacy, suspended him. Because, of course, Siras’ partner was also a man.

FIR filed against three AMU professors
An FIR has finally been registered against four AMU staffers and three media persons for forcefully landing up at Prof Sira's house and shooting him having sex with a rickshaw puller. The professor's body was discovered in his house on Wednesday evening.
They have been booked under various sections of the IPC for criminal intimidation, trespass and use of criminal force. The FIR has named AMU Proctor Dr Zubair Khan, Deputy Proctor Fareed Ahmed Khan, PRO Dr Rahat Abrar and Media Advisor Dr N A K Durrani. Three media persons have also been named - TV 100 Channel reporter, Syed Adil Murtaza, Voice of Nation reporter, Ashu Nesam and one unidentified reporter.
After the post-mortem on Thursday failed to ascertain the cause of death, the police now claim they are unable to locate his mobile phone. "We are still searching his apartment, haven't been able to locate it," said a police officer investigating the case.

"I am shocked and deeply hurt by his death. He was a good associate and was well-known in the literary circles. May his soul rest in peace,'' said Poet Grace. Like him there are hundreds of fans of Prof Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras in Nagpur deeply shaken by his sudden death.
Grace recalled Siras, a resident of Coffee House Square in Dharampeth, as well-known in the literary circles for his poems. The deceased professor was in the city and had just returned to Aligarh on Monday.
His friends and relatives, who wished not to be named due to controversy surrounding him, Siras was born and brought up in Nagpur. He had done his post-graduation in humanities from Hislop College before completing his PhD on eminent Marathi author Gajanan Tryambak Madkholkar's writings. His thesis was on 20 political novels of Madkholkar, perhaps only one from the university to have done his doctorate in this subject, considered difficult by many. It took Siras 10 years to complete his PhD from 1976 to 1985, during which he also pursued a master's degree in psychology. He had published a collection of seminar papers in English on comparative literature and his PhD thesis. Before joining AMU, he had worked as a research assistant in the Department of Linguistics at Ranchi University.

AMU: Who will stem the rot?
One of India's highest funded institutions of higher learning and research, the Aligarh Muslim University, appears in the media more often than not for the wrong reasons, for which the onus lies more on the AMU administration. But the Union government is equally responsible. Much is being talked about reforming, streamlining and revolutionising higher education. The pathetic state of affairs in AMU, and the government inaction against corruption and irregularities in the university system, despite clinching evidence, is disgusting.
In February, a 64-year-old senior faculty member was suspended. He was going to retire in the next few months. Complying with the orders of the AMU administration, he has not only vacated the AMU residential accommodation, but also reportedly left Aligarh for good.
While the AMU's 'show-cause notice' alleges that he indulged in 'gross misconduct', there are reports that he had indulged in homosexuality -- in his private space and with the consent of his partner. How did the administration get the evidence? It reportedly sent a 'student' to do a 'sting operation', got video clips and gave it to the AMU administration which showed greatest alacrity in taking action. While suspending a proud and reputed faculty member, the AMU chose to ignore the fact that less than a year earlier the Delhi high curt had decriminalised homosexuality.
Insiders will reveal that the law of the land is immaterial for the university, and religious codes are the only relevant reference. A modern university funded by a secular democratic State is run not in accordance with the law, but according to the Sharia.
But it should be noted that the 'minority' university also persecutes its own minority. The victim professor carried various layers of minority identities which might have made him vulnerable. In addition to his alleged sexual orientation, he is a Hindu on a Muslim majority campus; Marathi-speaking among the Urdu-Hindi speaking; and he taught Marathi literature in the department of modern Indian languages, the faculty of arts. He was also the chairman (head) of the department. Due to the suspension, he will no longer be a member of the selection committee of the teachers which will be held in a week or so. Many people link his suspension with the 'politics of the selection committee'.

AMU exhibits rare books
The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis inaugurated an exhibitfion of books on Seerat, Quraniyat and specimen of Quranic calligraphy at Maulana Azad Library recently.
Rare and illuminated copies of Holy Quran and calligraphic specimen were displayed today at the Seerat exhibition.
A large number of students, faculty members and other dignitaries including Nawab Ibne Saeed of Chhatari and Prof. Shamim Ahmad were also present.

‘Homosexuality is an uncontrollable feeling, like poetry’
“I am in the news every day these days... Friends update me on day-to-day news,” says Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) professor Srinivas Ramachandra Siras, who finds himself in the eye of a storm after being suspended for allegedly having sex with another man on the campus.
Siras was issued a ‘chargesheet’ by the university administration on Wednesday and asked to reply to the charges against him in 10 days. After being ordered out of his quarters and told not to leave town without permission, Siras has now rented a house in Aligarh.
“I have been getting calls from various gay rights groups pledging support, and I am considering taking their offer seriously,” he says. A poet, Siras got the Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad’s award for his 2002 collection, Grass Under My Feet.

AMU Urdu scholar felicitated for contributions
Ghalib Institute, Delhi recently felicitated noted Urdu scholar Professor Masood Husain Khan for his yeomen contribution to Urdu language and literature at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
Ninety two years old Professor Masood Husain Khan had served as Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi and Jamia Urdu, Aligarh. Prof. A. R. Kidwai, former Governor of Haryana felicitated him. On this occasion, Prof. A. R. Kidwai released a book on Prof. Masood Husain Khan's life and contribution.
Noted historian Prof. Irfan Habib said that AMU has a pride in producing such type of Urdu personality and said that Prof. Masood is a rationalist and he adopted scientific linguistic approach.
