Author of 'Leaving India' Comes to UIC

Last Wednesday at the Jane Addams Hull House, author Minal Hajratwala of Leaving India: My Family's Journey From Five Villages to Five Continents read from her piece and offered her thoughts on behalf of the Asian American Studies department and the Gender and Sexuality Center. Having the Silver Medal in Nonfiction recipient present a slideshow/reading was part of the launch for the newly offered minor in Asian American Studies which will be available to students come fall term.

Hajratwala's piece was a seven year long project that involved her traveling around the world to the various countries her family migrated/immigrated to from India, including: Fiji, the United States, and New Zealand. One motivation for her to write this blueprint of her family's diaspora was that she recognized that the personal aspect of the Indian diaspora was missing from today's literary dialogue.
