Disney to air series based on Tamil literature

Close on the heels of Cartoon Network announcing the launch of Amar Chitra Katha series based on the popular comic book, comes news that Disney Channel is all set to show an animated series based on the celebrated Tamil literary work Thirukkural.

Titled Ek Tha Jungle, the serial developed by Accel Animation Studios, showcases couplets from Thirukkural - written by noted Tamil poet Sri Thiruvalluvar. Each story of Ek Tha Jungle establishes a ‘Kural’(couplet) from Thirukkural told through animal characters. Some popular stories include The Clever Monkey, The Helping Bear and The Rabbit And The Tortoise.

Says Devika Prabhu, Associate Director, Programming, Walt Disney Television International India, “Disney Channel is committed to showcase evergreen stories that transcend generations and are locally relevant. Ek Tha Jungle is one of the many steps that we will take to enliven Indian storytelling heritage, which continues to remain thoroughly entertaining and equally relevant to modern-day India.” The series will premiere on April 5 and air Mondays to Thursdays at 9.30 am.
