Students of Marathi department of University of Pune (UoP) were left shocked as the organisers of Marathi literary meet being held in the city from Friday reneged on prizes for literary quiz competition. Winner team has received just half of the earlier announced prize amount.
Organisers of Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan had announced a literary quiz competition based on works of eight Marathi writers in February. Chairperson of the reception committee Satish Desai and chief executive manager of the meet Sanjay Bhaskar Joshi had declared that winning team would get cash prize of Rs 10,000 and books worth Rs 10,000.
As the quiz was a very tough challenge, a team of four students from Marathi department of UoP started preparations two months before the quiz. Each student shared two writers and studied thoroughly numerous original works and reference books, said a team member, Harish Shelke. The painstaking study paid off and they won the first prize. But to their utter dismay, they were given only Rs 5,000 in cash and books worth Rs 5,000. Similarly, second and third winners also had to be content with half the prize.
