Three years ago, as Bedford Gallery curator Carrie Lederer oversaw the selection and installation of public art for Walnut Creek's new downtown library, an idea for a parallel exhibition at the gallery exploring the depth of the genre of book art, began to germinate.
" 'Book art' is a synthesis of form and content and provides us a bridge between the traditional book and contemporary art," Lederer says. "Artists' books engage us in their meaning through a myriad of elements (versus just text), including words, image, materials, shape, form and color. The creative opportunity for structuring and packaging book art is endless - from pop-ups to sculptural housing."
The result is "Unbound: A National Exhibition of Book Art," featuring works by 65 book and visual artists including Michael Bartalos, Sas Colby, Emily McVarish, Erin Sweeney and Cara Barer.
