TAMIL MURASU, Singapore's national Tamil language daily, turns 75 on July 6, making it one of the oldest Tamil newspapers in the world.
Founded in 1935 by G Sarangapany,a Singaporean Indian business leader, the paper has grown from a circulation of about 200 copies in the founding years to a current healthy average of 13,000 on weekdays and close to 20,000 on Sundays. It was bought by Singapore Press Holdings in 1996 and has been profitable for several years now.
To celebrate the 75th anniversary, a bumper issue of Tamil Murasu will be distributed free on July 6. It will be sponsored by Mini Environment Services, a company which builds worker dormitories.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, a Tamil cultural show will be held on Sept 4 at the University Cultural Centre at NUS. A book, commissioned by Tamil Murasu on the contributions of Tamils in Singapore, will also be launched at the event by President S R Nathan.
