Film & lit fest on repeal of Section 377

Sexual minorities in Kolkata will express their views and renew their demand for quick repeal of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code through a film and a literary festival this month. Reading sessions, musical programs and interaction with the public will form the basis of the movement that aims to remove the discriminatory law against homosexuality.

SAATHII and Coalition of Rights Based Groups (CRBG) an advocacy forum for advancing the health and rights of sexual minorities will organise the Blue Apple Film Festival and the Siddhartha Gautam Film Festival to celebrate alternative sexuality.

Members of the community gathered at a book reading-cum-chat session at Crossword bookstore on Monday.

"There is no doubt that things have started changing in the period following Delhi high court's order calling for repeal of Section 377. But the debate is still on and the law exists. We are moving the Supreme Court against the section and the signs are encouraging. There is already a very proactive ground support for members of alternative sexuality in the city areas. We expect this to improve further so that we reach a situation where members of the community no longer feel insecure," said Debjyoti Ghosh, legal consultant, SAATHII.
