I&B ministry to introduce two bills in budget session

The ministry of information and broadcasting will introduce two bills to amend the Cinematograph Act as well as the Press and Registration of Books Act, 1867 in the upcoming budget session of the Parliament. Speaking to the media after a meeting of the consultative committee of the I&B ministry, Raghu Menon, secretary, I&B ministry said: “We are looking to introduce two bills in the Parliament, the Draft Press and Registration of Books and Publications Bill 2009 is already on our website and comments on the same will be received by 3 March. We are also working on a draft bill to amend the Cinematograph Act of 1952, which we should be able to in the second half of the parliament session."

The consultative committee on Friday met to discuss the general functioning of the public broadcaster Prasar Bharati. Menon said: “The question of regulation did not come up, however the Prasar Bharati leadership team gave a raised many issues in their presentation including funding of Prasar Bharati, whether it is fair to make it fully government funded and not have the broadcaster compete with private players on the lines of the BBC.
